Mercer Vu Farms Inc. operates 7 days a week, 365 days a year with these philosophies and goals in mind. We currently milk 1000 cows through the milking parlor three times per day. Total cow numbers including dry cows total 1100 cows. We ship on a daily basis around 85,000 pounds or over 9,500 gallons of milk. Our milking cows are housed in (2) 4 row freestall barns bedded with sand. We have roughly 4 groups of 230 cows, a postfresh group of 60 cows along with a group for treated cows. Our barns have curtain sidewalls and are built with comfort in mind. We have sprinklers and over 130 fans in the barns. The barns, cross-alleys, holding area and milking parlor are cleaned using a flush system. All of these areas except for the milking parlor are flushed with recycled water. The flush water goes through a sand separator that allows us to reuse sand to bed with. The water then goes through a solids separator to remove the solids. Currently the solids get spread on our fields but it is our hope in the near future to compost some of these solids to be marketed. The water then gets pumped into a large lagoon where it is aerated. The aeration keeps the water clean and odor free to use as flush and to irrigate on our fields. We have over 700 heifers being raised at various locations. We raise young calves until six months of age at our home farm and from six months until calving they are raised by custom heifer raisers. Our cropping enterprise consists of 900 acres. We raise corn, alfalfa and double crop rye which is all fed to our herd. Mercer Vu Farms Inc. functions under CAFO regulations and has all proper permits and works closely with DEP to ensure that our environment is protected and our waste handling practices are sound. Along with Ron, Rick and Rod Hissong, Mercer Vu Farms Inc. has 15 full time employees who are wonderful contributors to our success. Without their dedication and hard work our dairy would not be successful.
