Mercer Vu Happenings
February 12, 2003
Welcome to our new website. We have received many positive comments about our old site and appreciate the support. We have been pleased with what the site has done for us. You will never make everyone happy but it has done a good job of answering most people’s questions We have redesigned the sight to update people on what has happened the last few months.. which I can assure you is quite a lot. Kinks are getting worked out and things are starting to get a flow to them. We have a wonderful staff on board and everything is headed in the right direction with spring around the corner. Certain sections are not quite complete so be looking for updates. Thanks and we hope you enjoy the site.

Last year we couldn’t get it to rain, this year we can’t get it to stop raining long enough to get the fieldwork done and the corn planted. The cows are healthy, productive, and are doing well in the new facility. We are still making adjustments to our manure system which is not perfected yet. There is more odor than we want but the wet, cloudy weather has slowed the population of aerobic bacteria. As the system matures any issues will be resolved.
On the web site, I updated site with a new section about Mercer Vu’s economic impact on the local community and the PuleJet irrigation system at work. Also added a section with some pictures of the management and staff.

The rain continues to make harvest difficult but at least we have a bumper crop to harvest. Silage harvesting is well under way and should continue for a few more weeks. The cows continue to do well and should begin to milk even better when we get into new crop corn silage. We have lots of dry cows and are starting to calve pretty heavily. Our staff is doing an outstanding job getting animals calved and going. Now that we have corn off we are beginning to irrigate manure heavily again. We made a few changes to the manure system which has resolved a large portion of any odor problems from the spring. However, the system is a continual work in progress and we will continue to tweak things for even better performance. This summer we hosted a successful meeting of the Professional Dairy Managers of Pennsylvania and were honored with the 2003 Dairy Stakeholders Pacesetter Award. We would like to thank the Dairy Stakeholders and all the other groups and individuals who have honored us and blessed us with many kind comments.
I have updated the site with a new front page, updated some numbers and added some pictures of our milk truck.

It has been a while since I’ve made any updates. I’ve updated the site with some new pictures and a few other minor changes.
The dairy is clicking along. We have had an outstanding growing year, milk prices are better, purchased feed is getting cheaper and we have an outstanding group of individuals on staff. Not a whole lot to complain about! The cows could always be milking a little better considering the mild summer we’ve had but it seems difficult to get good milk production on last year’s forages.

Hard to believe 2005 is here and spring is right around the corner. We have been lucky so far and had a very mild winter. I’ve updated the website with an updated front page, some different pictures –including a new aerial photo of the farm (a special thanks goes to Sonny Parsons and family) I have also provided an update page for 1184 and all her news. Enjoy!

Sorry, sorry, sorry…. With all the fall work it took me a while to get you 1184’s update and her new addition. I have been getting many questions about the outcome so I finally put the update on the site. I have also added an virtual tour and some other new photos from around the farm. |
